Dr.Sujatha Devi P

P. Sujatha Devi, a native of Kayamkulam, Kerala is a first rank holder of M.Sc Chemistry 1985 from M.G. University, Kottayam (Department of Chemistry, St.Berchmans College, Changanassery).She received Ph.D in Chemistry from the department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1991. Dr.Devi joined as a scientist in CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, in 1997 and became Senior Principal Scientist in 2012. She has done her post-doctoral studies at CUNY, New York and SUNY, Stony Brook, USA. She was heading the Functional Materials and Devices Division at CGCRI before joining NIIST. She has been leading a very active research group in CGCRI and has been working in the area of processing and characterization of functional materials for applications ranging from fuel cell, solar cell, chemical and biosensors and nano materials for drug delivery applications. She is a recipient of many awards like Rheometric Scientific-ITAS National Award from the Indian Thermal Analysis Society in co-operation with Rheometric Scientific,UK., Lakshmi Gold Medal from Indian Association of Solid State Chemists and Allied Scientists. P. K. Kunju Sahib Memorial Award for Excellence in Chemistry from MSM College. Kayamkulam, Kerala, MRSI Medal from Materials Research Society of India in 2010, R. L. Thakur Memorial Award from the Indian Ceramic Society, MRSI-ICSC Superconductivity & Materials Science Annual Prize in 2017 and Chemical Research Society of India Bronze Medal in 2018 for her contributions in the area of materials science, chemical science and nanoscience and technology. She is an elected Fellow of the West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. In 2018, Royal Society of Chemistry has selected her as one among 100 women of Chemistry authors in a themed collection of celebrating excellence in Chemistry.

Thirteen students have been awarded PhD under her guidance and many are currently pursuing Ph.D with her at CGCRI, Kolkata.  She has also mentored many prestigious post-doctoral fellows at CGCRI. She has authored or co-authored around 125 SCI journal publications that are extensively cited, three book chapters and three patents. Dr. Devi has contributed immensely in many R&D areas in the form of leading many projects of national importance related to chemical sciences and materials science and technology. During her career as a scientist she has also visited many countries such as USA, Japan, Italy, Singapore, Kuwait and Bangladesh.

She has served in the Executive Council of Indian Thermal Analysis Society and Society for Materials Chemistry.  Currently, Dr. Devi is a council member of Chemical Research Society of India, Materials Research Society of India, Indian Ceramic Society, and West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology.

Dr. P. Sujatha Devi joined CSIR-NIIST on 4th March 2019 and is attached to the Chemical Sciences and Technology Division.
