Title of Technology
Functionally Graded Aluminum Alloy and Composite Products and Process Technology
Executive Summary
A large number of components for engineering and structural applications demand location specific performance under service conditions. Functionally graded materials (FGM) are tailored materials with gradual transition in the composition or microstructure which motivates the changes in the properties, and performance of that location thereby meeting the functional needs of the component.
In the present method, the FGM concepts are successfully adopted for the design and fabrication of lightweight aluminum composite – functionally graded material components for automotive applications with improved location specific mechanical and wear properties. The technique has been used to fabricate and demonstrate the automotive components of brake rotor disc, cylinder liners and gear housing piston rings in collaboration with user industries. The lightweight brake disc components can be used in automotives for enhanced braking performance, handling and driving performance of the vehicle. The Al- FGM cylinder liners can provide low coefficient of friction and enhanced wear behaviour which in turn improves fuel efficiency and controlled emission.
The gear housing piston rings are developed and tested (in terms of radiographic quality, loading and wear properties) for combat vehicle applications of CVRDE.
Potential Market
According to the latest report published by Market Research Future (MRFR), the automotive disc brake market is projected to garner a market share of $15.6 billion, resulting in a thriving compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5% during the forecast period of 2019-2023. Similarly, the global automotive cylinder liner market was estimated to be valued at US$ 3,922.4 Mn in 2017 and is projected to reach US$ 5,627.9 Mn by the end of 2027, expanding at a CAGR of 3.7% over the forecast period (2017-2027).
The global metal matrix composite market is expected to reach USD 433.3 million by 2022, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Increasing need for high-performance composite metals from automotive, aerospace, and marine industries is expected to fuel the product demand over the forecast period. Global metal matrix composites market was 6,174.0 kilo tons in 2014 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.3% from 2015 to 2022. Aluminum accounted for 36.4% of the total MMC demand in 2014.
