Research Experience

Dr. Asok has more than 10 years of interdisciplinary research and development experience. He started his research career with M.Tech thesis work (2007-2009) at Amrita Centre for Nanosciences, where he developed multifunctional inorganic nanoprobes based on lanthanide-doped oxides and oxysulfide for multimodal imaging and therapy, this work resulted in one publication and a patent application. In 2010, he joined IIT Bombay for his Ph.D. under Institute Teaching Assistantship category with Prof. A. R. Kulkarni’s research group and worked on oxygen vacancy promotion in ZnO nanocrystals and its applications. In this area, he had 8 publications and filed 2 patents. He received his Ph.D. from IIT Bombay in 2015 and subsequently joined as a Research Associate in the same institute. During this appointment, he worked in the area of hybrid optical material development. In 2016, he attended the Indo-Swiss Academia-Industry Training camp working on the industrial translation of his patented innovation in the sunscreen active ingredient. Subsequently, he joined CSIR-NIIST and runs a DST-INSPIRE faculty project in Engineering and Technology stream with a focus on innovative technology development for integrating concentrated photovoltaics into built space. His current research interest and expertise include hybrid nanomaterials, surface and interface engineering, engineered fluids, advanced photonic designs and refractive index engineering for applications ranging from energy, environment and healthcare. To date, he had filed five patents out of which two patents granted. Dr. Asok’s research contributions are recognized with several early career awards and honors including one among the top ten Indo-Swiss innovators representing India in the Indo-Swiss Academia-Industry Training Camp-2016 at EPFL-Lausanne and Venture Lab-Zurich. In addition to this, he is a recipient of the Department of Science and Technology, INSPIRE-Faculty Award in the Engineering and Technology. He also received IIT Bombay Ph.D. Thesis Excellence Award for the academic years 2014-2016. His research on multifunctional sunscreens is covered in the Indian Express-Science and technology news and also as IIT Bombay research highlights. Other accomplishments included GATE-2007, DST Travel Award, and ICMR Travel Award.
